I genuinely had no idea which blue to pick

What it actually means to use Claude as a design consultant

I'm not talking about asking AI to "generate a logo" — I tried that, and most of the time the output isn't directly usable. What I mean is treating Claude as an always -available design-thinking partner. You tell it your business context , your target customer, and the feeling you want to convey; it translates your vague "something feels off" into actionable design language.

My designer friend Xiaolin (based in Hangzhou, three years taking independent illustration clients) told me recently that the first thing she does with every new client is run a full conversation with Claude about "what is this brand's personality" before she ever walks into the client meeting. She said it makes her so much more grounded in those meetings — a client saying "I want it to feel premium" no longer spins her out . She doesn't know any code. Can you help me evaluate whether my current direction fits?" Then describe your current colors, fonts, or any brand -related screenshot you have.

A mistake I made: early on I asked too broadly — "help me design a brand" — and everything it returned was unusable. Once I learned to give very specific context , it actually became useful. I got stuck on this longer than I should have.

My take differs depending on where you are right now

If you're just starting out and don't have paying clients yet: No pressure to try this now — but if you're stuck on positioning or visual direction, spending half an hour talking it through with Claude costs nothing and will at least get the fuzzy ideas in your head into words.

If you have one or two clients and you're working on delivery quality: I'd suggest running a "brand language clarification" session with Claude before every new project, then condensing its output into a one-pager you bring into the client meeting. This makes you look more professional and cuts down revision rounds significantly — I've tested this firsthand.

If you're scaling up and starting to manage a small team or outsourcing: Consider making "run a Claude conversation to map out design direction" a standard step in your process, so everyone who touches the design goes through this round before execution begins. It keeps the whole team's sense of "brand feel" aligned and reduces rework a lot.

This tool isn't for everyone. Some people have a natural design eye; some already have a trusted designer they work with regularly — in those cases there's no reason to bother. But if you're stuck at the step where you can't articulate what you actually want, I think it's worth a try.
